Ames Flashback: Washington-Grizzly Stadium

Sixty-Two: Ames News — delivered.

When you’re in Griz Country, you’re in Ames Country too!

Twenty years ago this month, the Montana Grizzlies kicked off the 2003 football season in a newly expanded Washington-Grizzly Stadium at the University of Montana in Missoula. From April through August of that year, Ames Construction performed the fast-paced and schedule-critical stadium expansion project, which added 4,100 seats.

Ames crews demolished existing foundations, supplied and erected 12,000 precast concrete elements, installed prefabricated aluminum seating and handrails, and constructed new restroom facilities.

With a capacity of more than 25,000 today, the stadium is one of the largest in the FBC. And it hosts more than football! The Rolling Stones held their first and only Montana concert in the stadium a few years after the expansion. Paul McCartney, Guns N’ Roses, and Pearl Jam have all rocked out at the venue.

The Griz opened the 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2. If you have a chance to catch a game this season, give a cheer to the Griz and to Ames Construction!
