Employee Resource Groups at Ames: Empowering Employees

Sixty-Two: Ames News — delivered.

At Ames Construction, we support each other like a family. This family-first culture helps us break down biases and barriers. As we build on our One Ames philosophy, we are emphasizing Belonging, Inclusion, and Support (BIAS).

  • Belonging is the feeling of acceptance and being valued.
  • Inclusion is an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.
  • A supportive environment means that we encourage and uplift each other, working together to achieve success.

Together, we’re fostering a supportive and inclusive culture dedicated to our shared values and goals.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are one way Ames supports our culture. ERGs are voluntary, employee-led groups that unite coworkers who share common interests or backgrounds.

ERGs provide a supportive environment where people can connect with each other, share ideas, and advocate for positive change. Through ERGs, Ames can help our team members feel valued, supported, and empowered. This has a range of benefits for both employees and the company.

Ames established an ERG for veterans (Ames Service Members Career Enhancement & Development, or ASCEND) in 2024 and is launching an ERG for women.

“The ASCEND ERG is a group to connect veterans and recruit other veterans into Ames, and a place for families to meet and support Ames veterans and family members. It’s a place to plan activities that honor all veterans, especially those who gave their life for this great country.” —Travis Legare, Southwest Engineering Manager, U.S. Army Veteran

Ames is Fueled by Family, and we encourage employees with family members in specific affinity groups to join. This fosters a sense of closeness within an ERG that treats everyone like family. It also strengthens our organization and enhances the support network for all members.

Benefits of ERGs for Ames

Engaging and retaining employees

ERGs help foster a sense of belonging among coworkers, which leads to higher levels of engagement and job satisfaction. When Ames team members feel supported and connected, they are more likely to stay here. This helps to reduce turnover and build stronger, more cohesive teams at all levels.

Improving company culture

ERGs help shape workplace culture. At Ames, these groups reinforce our core values: people, team, our bond, persistence, and vision. When coworkers from all backgrounds feel heard and supported, overall morale and productivity improve. This ultimately benefits our bottom line.

Developing leaders

ERGs provide excellent opportunities for employees to take on leadership roles outside of their day-to-day responsibilities. By leading or participating in an ERG, employees develop valuable skills in communication, project management, and strategic planning. For Ames, this means employees are gaining experience that will contribute to their growth and potential promotion within the company.

Strengthening community relations

ERGs can help Ames build stronger relationships with the communities where we live and work. Through volunteering and supporting vital causes, Ames strengthens its reputation as a company with a mission to help our communities flourish.

Enhancing innovation and problem-solving

Through ERGs, Ames benefits from the perspectives of its workforce. These groups often suggest new ideas that can improve operations, safety protocols, and project execution. Diverse viewpoints lead to better problem-solving, which is essential in the dynamic construction industry.

Join an Ames ERG

Women ERG

In the Women ERG, coworkers can connect, share experiences, and support one another. This group focuses on mentorship, career development, and leadership training within Ames. By offering a space for networking and building leadership skills, this ERG will help Ames retain and promote our construction professionals.

ASCEND ERG

The ASCEND ERG aims to harness the exceptional talent of military veterans. Veterans bring invaluable skills in leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork to Ames. This group will provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and guidance on translating military experience into the construction industry. Additionally, it will highlight the advantages of hiring veterans and the unique contributions they offer to the construction workforce.

ERGs are open to all Ames employees. If you or someone you know is interested in joining an ERG, please obtain approval from a supervisor and visit the Ames ERG page to sign up:
