Ames crews are constructing a bypass and building relationships in Shelby, North Carolina.
For the bypass alignment of U.S. 74 at Shelby, crews are constructing 6.1 miles of mainline and 9 bridges. Milestones in 2024 include the beginning of grading operations in project areas 1 and 2 and the beginning of the construction of bridges 8 and 9.
Numerous crews are contributing to the efforts, including:
- 2 pipe crews installing storm drain and water main.
- 1 pile driving crew and 2 structures crews currently working on three bridges.
- 1 erosion control crew performing erosion control maintenance in addition to ongoing installation of ditches and basins.
- 1 scraper crew and 1 truck crew moving 1 million cubic yards of material in 2024.
🤝🏼 With Ames looking to grow in the region, the team continues to develop a strong working relationship with NCDOT. The full project team gathers each week to review safety, schedule, and operations. Field leadership is working hand-in-hand with inspectors.
“Members of the Ames team and NCDOT inspectors hosted a dinner and site visit with a local church-based youth organization,” says project manager Abigail Boll. “Interns, engineers, and operators alike enjoyed grilling together and showing off Ames’ yellow iron and survey gear to the children and their families.”
🐟 Ames will also be constructing a 4.2-million-gallon fish habitat upon completion of excavation from borrow. “The landowner has befriended several Ames team members and looks forward to our work creating an additional fish habitat,” Abigail says.
