Qualifying Life Events: What Are They?

Sixty-Two: Ames News — delivered.

A “qualifying life event” (QLE) refers to a significant change in a person’s life circumstances, which allows them to enroll or modify their health insurance coverage outside of the standard Open Enrollment period.

What types of events count as QLEs?

  • Birth, adoption, or placement of a child
  • Change in eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, or other government-sponsored healthcare
  • Change of dependent’s employment status
  • Custody or guardianship
  • Divorce
  • Death
  • Loss of coverage
  • Marriage

What should I do if I experience a QLE?

Employees have 30 days from the date of the QLE to make benefit changes (or no later than 60 days if due to a loss or gain of government coverage), so it’s important to act quickly!

  1. Log into Workday and navigate to Menu > Benefits & Pay.
  2. Select Change Benefits under the Tasks and Reports section.
  3. Select the reason for your change and enter in the Benefit Event Date. Note that uploading documentation will be required. A list of acceptable documentation can be found at QLE Documentation Examples.
  4. Make the necessary updates to your benefits.

Once submitted, your updates will go to Ames' benefit carriers the Friday following your submission and new benefit cards will be mailed out, when applicable.

Questions?

If you have any questions while you’re enrolling in Workday, you may contact the Benefit Enrollment Center at 877-328-3607, available Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. CST. Otherwise, please reach out to your Area Office HR or corpbenefits@amesco.com.
