January is a great time to re-boot your wellness routine. While you are setting New Year’s resolutions and adopting new habits, be aware of these conditions that are a focus of this month:
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
Cervical cancer can often be found early, and sometimes even prevented, by having regular screening tests. If detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers. The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals with a cervix have routine cervical cancer screenings beginning at age 25.
Glaucoma Awareness Month
Glaucoma is an eye disease that usually has no symptoms in its early stages. Without proper treatment, glaucoma can lead to blindness. The good news is that with regular eye exams, early detection, and treatment, you can preserve your sight.
Thyroid Gland Awareness Month
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that is normally located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroid’s job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body.
When your thyroid makes either too much or too little of these important hormones, it’s called a thyroid disease. There are several different types of thyroid diseases. Symptoms such as fatigue, unexplained weight loss or gain, moodiness, or anxiety could be related to your thyroid.
