Electric batteries are already shipping out of the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite, even as Ames crews continue to develop the site.
More than 5,000 people will eventually be employed in the site’s advanced manufacturing facilities.
After wrapping up mass grading at GRMS in late 2023, Ames crews have been busy performing transportation projects that will help those people get to and from work as smoothly as possible. Ames broke ground on the TWA-2 work package in January 2024, building transportation access on the south end of the site. Crews previously completed access on the north end.
Scope for TWA-2 included an access road into GRMS, two underpasses on US 421, and associated loops, ramps, and roundabouts. In February, Ames began providing modified access to the site so that manufacturing could begin, and full access was opened up on Nov. 1. Ames worked with the client (NCDOT) and the designer through the CMGC process to accelerate areas of the job needing access sooner.
“A big challenge has been coordinating and meeting the needs of not only our client but Toyota’s needs,” says Senior Project Manager Bolton Webster. “Having to provide access before the project is complete has required intensive coordination between all parties.”
In 2026, crews will complete punch work for TWA-2 and prepare for the final GRMS transportation package: a bridge over US 421 north of the first intersection Ames built on the project.
