From Ames to Antarctica

Sixty-Two: Ames News — delivered.

Sly Oliver is proof that a construction career can take you anywhere—and you can take Ames with you wherever you go.

A journeyman universal heavy equipment operator/rigger with IUOE Local 49, Sly worked for Ames Construction most recently on the Highway 169 Redefine project in Elk River, Minnesota.

Today, he is in Antarctica on a six-month contract with a military contractor at McMurdo Station, where he operates various types of heavy equipment and trucks.

McMurdo Station is an Antarctic research station on the south tip of Ross Island. It is operated by the United States through the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP), a branch of the National Science Foundation.
